How you make a difference

Royal British Legion beneficiary

Barry O'Connell32 year-old Barry served in the Royal Marines for 12 years as a Physical Training Instructor. He represented the Royal Marines boxing team on many occasions and received a highly recognised commendation for his services whilst on a recent tour in Afghanistan.

He has physically trained some of the highest ranking officers in the British Army, and was responsible for preparing 45 Commando for their operation Herrick tour of Afghanistan, as part of Zulu Company and as a Section Commander in 2008.

Since leaving the Armed Forces in May 2011, Barry has been awarded £25,000 through our Be the Boss scheme to start up his own fitness studio in Hammersmith, and already has several interested clients.

"The scheme is amazing for guys like me - I've been given such a great opportunity to utilise the skills I took with me when I left the Royal Marines. I hope others leaving the Forces can benefit from the programme as I have."
