Dementia care - the background

Older personGalanos House has been providing first rate care to the ex-Service community in the Midlands since 1967.

A Legion welfare survey in 2005, on the profile of the ex-Service community in the UK, predicted that by 2020, the 85+ age group will have increased from 290,000 to 920,000.

In Warwickshire, we estimate that there are around 10,000 ex-Service people over the age of 70. About 1,600 are likely to be over 85 years of age. One in three of these are likely to be affected by dementia. And the numbers are expected to rise.

Nowhere is dignity more important than in the care of people with dementia.

The Legion needs to develop its provision of dementia care to increase the range of services that it can offer residents at Galanos House and meet this increasing demand.

The new Unit has been carefully designed to provide a safe, homely, stimulating environment; a place where each resident's individual life history can be enhanced instead of forgotten.
